The Nativity. 20th Century Fox, 1978, VHS.

A natural portrayal of the journeys and trials of Joseph and Mary as they are confronted by the realities of the Nativity story.  One of the best dramatic portrayals of this central story, starring Madeleine Stowe and John Shea .  97 minutes. 

the Intruder. Vision Video, 1994, VHS.

The Barton's happy, comfortable, suburban existence is thrown into chaos when cousin Kevin comes to live with them and everyone's patience and character are tested to the limit by the adventure that unfolds. The young people discover stolen goods stored in a nearby abandoned house. They have to deal with the gang that hid them, the police who want them, and their own consciences. Through it all everyone endures difficulties and grows in ways they never expected. This film helps young people learn to take responsibility for their actions and see the power of forgiveness.  Part of the Youth Adventure series.  58 minutes.

This BBC miniseries benefits from having the time to tell the whole of Louisa May Alcott's timeless story about four sisters in New England during the Civil War.  2 VHS tapes, 205 minutes. 

Old Yeller. Walt Disney, 1957, VHS.

This is the vintage Disney film originally released in 1957. The simple, heart-warming story of a boy who bonds with a feisty stray dog in 1860s Texas.  With Old Yeller at his side, Kirk becomes a little man, who in the end must make a decision so heart-breaking that it's one of filmdom's most memorable moments.  84 minutes. 

Faithful Women of the Bible. Candlelight Media, 2003, VHS.

Three Short Films featuring the hemorrhaging woman, Mary and Martha and the Widow of Zarephath. 
The Touch -- After years of shame and isolation as one "unclean" with an issue of blood, a woman hears of the Master's coming. Desperate to have a life without scorn and contempt, the woman feels impressed to touch His robe, confident that this small act can make her whole. Her faith is rewarded as He notices her act of faith and heals her.
This program is in Aramaic with subtitles in English.

The Sisters of Bethany -- Mary and Martha, who together with their brother Lazarus are good friends of Jesus, face a test. Lazarus has fallen ill. Urgently they send for Jesus to come to his aid; however, He delays the journey, and Lazarus dies. The sisters despair with Lazarus' death. Anxiously they await Jesus' coming to comfort them, and confront their personal trials of faith and submission to God's will.

Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath -- A desperate young widow, seeking means to provide meager sustenance for her son and herself encounters the prophet Elijah. His entreaties challenge her faith when he asks her for the last scrap of food she possesses - a bit of meal and a drop of oil; it is the last meal for her and her small son. As she exercises her faith and shares their meager resources with God’s prophet, the widow and her son are blessed.

Wounded Healer. Franciscan Communications, 1990, VHS.

This video is based on the true story of an alcoholic Roman Catholic priest, and his recovery through the support of a simple laborer who is himself a recovering alcoholic. Several years later the tables are turned, and it is the priest who comes to the assistance of the man who helped him. A contemporary version of the Good Samaritan parable.  16 min.

Waiting for the Wind. Envoy, 1990, VHS.

This is a 30 min. video starring Robert Mitchum as a Midwesterner with not long to live. His dream is to build a ship and sail off into the ocean, even though he's miles away from one.  The relationship with his young grandson is also a focus. A touching story, produced by a Christian denomination.

Second Chances. Independent, 1998, VHS.

About a little girl who was injured in a car accident that claimed her father's life.  She and her mother move into a trailer park, and next door is a stable.  She soon falls in love with a horse named Ginger, who has also gone through some rough times.  The two of them form a bond. 

The Miracle Worker. MGM, 1962, DVD

This inspirational story of courage and hope is a contemporary classic . Locked in a frightening, lonely world of silence and darkness since infancy, 7-year-old Helen Keller has never seen the sky, heard her mother's voice or expressed her innermost feelings. Then Annie Sullivan, a 20-year-old teacher from Boston, arrives. Having just recently regained her own sight, the no-nonsense Annie reaches out to Helen through the power of touch the only tool they have in common and leads her bold pupil on a miraculous journey from fear and isolation to happiness and light.

Set in 90 AD, this film gives us insight into the lives of Christians who lived under the domination of Roman rule. Emperor Domitian is in power, and his goal is to kill every living Christian who does not denounce God and give allegiance to Domitian alone, who has claimed himself god over all things.  97 minutes, not rated.
