Markus Zusak: I Am the Messenger
A fabulous literary work of trial and sacrifice. This is a better choice for youth and adults: it would certainly be rated PG-13.
Patricia Polacco: Just Plain Fancy
An Amish girl struggles with the difference between outlandish showing off and something that is beautiful by God's handiwork. Also consider Rechenka's Eggs for a more devotional religious practice of decorating eggs.
Moses: The Long Road to Freedom
Fascinating illustration of the story of the Exodus.
Carole Boston Weatherford: Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Caldecott Honor Book)
Liberation is a key theme of Lent. This children's book carefully relates the story of Harriet Tubman to the biblical experience of the Exodus.
Noah's Ark
A striking illustration and retelling of Noah and his epic. This title is about more than the zoo on the water; it focuses just as much on the personal journey and trials of Noah and his family.
Joyce Denham: The Hard to Swallow Tale of Jonah and the Whale (Tales from the Bible)
A simple and elegant telling of the journey of Jonah, a reluctant prophet.
Kate Dicamillo: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
No author does a better job of dealing with pain, loss and resurrection than this author. Just as great for adults as for children.
Jeff Brumbeau: The Quiltmaker's Gift
A wonderful book with a Franciscan ethic. The role of sacrifice and giving up material things would be a good choice for Lent.

The Barton's happy, comfortable, suburban existence is thrown into chaos when cousin Kevin comes to live with them and everyone's patience and character are tested to the limit by the adventure that unfolds. The young people discover stolen goods stored in a nearby abandoned house. They have to deal with the gang that hid them, the police who want them, and their own consciences. Through it all everyone endures difficulties and grows in ways they never expected. This film helps young people learn to take responsibility for their actions and see the power of forgiveness. Mama Luka Comes Home. Gateway Films, 1989, VHS.

Doctor Helen Roseveare, affectionately called "Mama Luka," pioneered vital medical work in the rain forests of the Belgian Congo—now Zaire. After Independence in 1964, the country was ravaged by the Simba Rebellion. Helen, caught up in the horror of the revolution, was beaten, raped and imprisoned by the rebels. Mama Luka Comes Home vividly tells her story of forgiveness and faithfulness to those she came to serve. This is a story of love overcoming hatred, brutality, and racial prejudice. 60 mn.
